Mid-Atlantic
‘Brilliance’ autumn fern(Dryopteris erythrosora‘Brilliance’)
USDA Hardiness Zones:5 to 9
Size:22 column inch tall and 18 inch wide-eyed
Conditions : Partial to full shade ; moist , rich , well - drained soil

‘ genius ’ is an improved shape of autumn fern . Still semievergreen , with gravid grain and even more colour , ‘ Brilliance ’ offers vivid copper new growth in spring that turns immature in summertime and russet in fall . This tough fern reliably spring from snow cover version and stand up to moth-eaten winds . Once established , ‘ Brilliance ’ postulate little care , though I do cut back the old fronds in early bound to better enjoy the fresh emerging fronds .
‘Sagae’ hosta(Hosta‘Sagae’)
Zones:3 to 9
sizing : Up to 3 pes grandiloquent and 4 foot wide
Conditions : Partial to full shade ; fairly moist soil

Nothing thrills me more than seeing tightly roll up hosta leaves emerging in spring . My preferent genus Funka , ‘ Sagae ’ , is bluff and beautiful , with rippled leaves of frosted Amytal with creamy white security deposit . I turn it next to buttercup winter hazel ( Corylopsis pauciflora , zone 6–9 ) , whose airy nature and delicate leave complement the hosta ’s significant sizing , and then pair it with green hellebore ( Helleborusspp . and cvs . , Zones 4–9 ) and ‘ Aureola ’ Nipponese forest skunk ( Hakonechloa macra‘Aureola ’ , Zones 5–9 ) . ‘ Sagae ’ tolerates cold winter and never weave in our hot and humid summers .
‘Silver Sceptre’ sedge(Carex morrowii‘Silver Sceptre’)
Zones:5 to 9
Size:1 foot tall and 18 inches wide
Conditions : Partial shade ; moist , well - drained soil

This finely textured , fount - shaped semievergreen grass lends an elegant and bright emphasis to a shady smear . ‘ Silver Sceptre ’ sedge is not crabby and spreads lento by rhizomes to form a undercoat cover in moderately moist soil . I like to plant it in drifts along a shady path , under the canopy of a ‘ Waterfall ’ Japanese maple ( genus Acer palmatum * ‘ Waterfall ’ , zone 5–8 ) , or next to a H2O feature , where its fountainlike conformation mimics the stream of urine . This sedge only needs to be cut back by two - thirds in other bound to get it ready for new ontogenesis .
Bigroot geranium(Geranium macrorrhizumand cvs.)
Zones:4 to 8
Size : Up to 20 inches tall and 2 foot full
Conditions : Full sun to fond wraith ; well - drained soil

This hardy geranium is great for ironical - refinement situations . It spreads quickly by rhizomes to form a dense , weed - smothering soil cover that ’s good for massing around trees or edging a subtlety border . Bigroot geranium is faithfully hardy after cold winters , and it also takes the heat of our summers when uprise in shadowiness . Once established , share this easy - care flora with friends is a pushover : A gentle tug relinquish not only a delicious smell but also a side rootstalk that is quick to replant in a newfangled garden .
