Japanese Maples are a favorite tree for their bright foliage and interesting shapes. Japanese Maple trees are not difficult to prune or train to keep looking their best.
I am not an expert or trained , I have just experimented with seedlings I have grown and am passing on what I have learned so far .
Japanese maple are so beautiful no matter what time of twelvemonth . Especially if you prune and train Nipponese Maples into beautiful soma .
In Spring they go forth with bright leaf and as summer progresses that foliage can commute color depend on the variety .

Mine I share today are basically mutt . When you start Japanese Maples from seeds you get what you get . The seminal fluid I develop are from a winery that has a wide mountain range of Japanese Maples of all colors .
This post contains affiliate link . If you make a leverage after clicking a connection I may make a small commission at no cost to you .
They cross pollinate so the colouring of Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree you get from acquire those seeds can display any of the qualities from any of those trees . So if you think you are going to get a carmine Japanese Maple because the tree you collect seed from is red then you may be sadly disappointed .

But that does n’t mean you wo n’t get pretty color and you may very well get red . It is a surprise every time .
Be sure to see the video recording at the end where I partake plain pruning and then how I prune and shape others .
When to Prune Japanese Maples
Lets get started on pruning . This is best done in late winter while the tree is still dormant . Plus with no foliage it is easier to see where you postulate to prune out or back limb .
Where to start Pruning
start up with limbs that may be dead or cross where they could fray or have been fray .
observe the limbs that are too close together . pluck one to keep and cut down out the others .
Take your time , and walk around the tree often to ensure you are keeping it even .

Prune to Define the Japanese Maple Trunk
You will mark the stems and limbs coming up from the base of this Nipponese Maple obscures a truthful torso area . Those will be trimmed off .
The limb at the top the pointer is point at is much longer than any others and needs to be trimmed back .
Some limbs just need to be edit out so there is not too many go every which a ways .

For smaller limbs I use myFiskars Prunersand for bigger I expend theFiskars pruning hook
Create an upper Canopy
See how few limbs are leave on the upper part of this tree ? And I have reduce the arm that was so longsighted it was off the camera view . Now it is inline with the other branches .
The rest of the trunk beneath this canopy is clear of limbs .
How to Shape Japanese Maple
I have no approximation how this is done by experts but this works for me and you care really make some grand shapes .
Start with pantyhose strip show . They are stretchable so they do n’t cause damage , they last evermore and they in reality turn green in the weather . I use them extensively whentraining rose on arborsorpillaring roses .
Bow the branch down and unattackable by tying in with the pantyhose strips . This may bet overly dramatic but they will reverberate back some after being tie down .

See the top limbs ? They were wed down antecedently , note how they came back up some . It ends up being an umbrella shape .
I leave them link up like this at least one time of year but I may see how they are do in mid to late Summer to see how they are influence up .
I will be sure to share the onward motion .

Here is my video for you ! Enjoy .
