At the get-go of this horticulture season I was look for a way of life to repurpose an old hanging basketful . I thought about replanting it with another batch of flowering annuals , and I also considered turn it into a miniature herb garden .

Then it pass to me that I could do both just to see what would take place .

I covered the drainage maw with a paper coffee filter to keep soil in , but allow water to debilitate out . Then I filled the container with a good quality potting mixture , added a slow - release fertiliser and localise about planting .

On one side of the basket I planted a fernleaf Anethum graveolens plant and on the other a ‘ Sun Sugar ’ cherry tomato plant plant . I also summate a yellowish calibrachoa and another flowering yearbook called SuperCal ‘ Vanilla Blush ’ because of its strange color .

The SuperCal is a cross between a genus Petunia and a calibrachoa . I reckon with that kind of pedigree I ’d be see to it of nearly non - stop bloom all season .

I ’ve been trim bits of Anethum graveolens to utilize in flavoring Opuntia tuna salad and other summer dishes , and the pruning has help keep the dill achievable . But now the tomato plant has farm well outside the basket ’s bounds , and it ’s load with bright orange cherry tree tomatoes .

Around the Fourth of July , I started append a water soluble fertilizer to the watering can for the hanging field goal . The spare fertilizer helped with both flowering and fruiting . Because the roots have probably wholly filled the basket , I ’ve needed to water every morning . On especially red-hot days , I irrigate in the evening , too .

It ’s been fun to see the result of my eatable cosmetic experiment . I can imagine next year I might try a different compounding that sport another edible , like noggin , with a different combination of flowers .
