There ’s been a monumental uproar in the blogosphere and the mainstream press over theStanford University study cite that constitutional nutrient contain no more nutritional value than conventionally grown foods .
Michael Pollan , food activist and writer of bestsellersThe Omnivore ’s Dilemma , In Defense of Food : An Eater ’s Manifesto , andFood rule : An Eater ’s manual of arms , was late interview on KQED , San Francisco , and had this to say :
Pollan on the results of the Stanford organic food vs conventionally grown food study:
“ … this is not new research , it ’s a [ critical review of previously carry on inquiry ] , and I ’ve seen the accurate same datum analyse in a very different direction . A lot of it depend on how you wangle your assumptions and statistical method acting . “
“ I think we ’re kind of rear a wheat human being and then knock it down , the straw gentleman being that the whole point of constituent food is that it ’s more alimentary . The whole point of constitutive food is that it ’s more environmentally sustainable . That ’s the strong and easier case to make . “
Pollan on the study’s conclusion that conventional produce contained significantly more pesticide residue than organic produce:
“ If you ’re interested about pesticide residues in your food , you ’re much intimately offbuying organic . The study said all these pesticide residues in conventional green goods are allowable under EPA rules , [ but ] … there are questions about whether those levels are okay for youngster and for meaning char . “
“ There was a very important subject field , which was mention in the meta study , aboutorganophosphates[the base of many pesticide and herbicides ] and the liaison to various cognitive trouble in children . This is epidemiologic , and it ’s very hard to prove crusade and effect , but precaution would contend for keep those chemical out of your body , and constitutional garden truck is one way to do this . “
Pollan on the choice between conventionally grown and organically grown food:
“ If you ’re concerned about nutritional time value and taste , you might retrieve that the local food , which is more likely to have been pick when it was advanced , is better . Because any food that ’s traveled a few days to get to you or been refrigerated for a tenacious time is going to have diminish nutritional value . That argues for fresh being more significant than organic .
“ But if you ’re concerned about pesticides – countenance ’s say you ’re meaning or have untried kids … then you might opt organic , because it will have on equipoise fewer pesticide residues . You may also be concerned with the welfare of the people beak and the farmers grow your produce , or you may be concerned about soil wellness — that would argue for constituent too . “
