Whether you visit Lakewold Gardens in the dead of winter or the peak of summer , this Pacific Northwest horticultural haven offers beautiful blooms and hidden discoveries during every season .

The Lakewold estate and grounds in Lakewood , Wash. , were donated to the non-profit-making organization Friends of Lakewold in 1987 by owner Eulalie Wagner . An avid nurseryman , Mrs. Wagner made this garden her lifespan project and designed it with the help of Thomas Church , a head American landscape designer during the 20th century . The gardens feature a all-encompassing multifariousness of works and Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree collections unionize in “ garden rooms , ” including rhododendrons , fern , roses , Nipponese maples , shade plants and woodland gardens . Spring : pinkish dogtooth violet ( Trillium grandiflorum ) can be find in bombastic Wave along the trials , and ephemeral tetterwort ( Sanguinaria Canadensis ‘ Multiplex ’ ) emerges in the fern garden , with its pure bloodless flowers that seem to glow from a distance . In the early spring , the walk from the stone garden on the South Border trail is intoxicating , displaying the beautiful fragrant flowers of Siebold ’s Magnolia .

The most brilliant spring show is put on by Lakewold ’s nearly 900 rhododendron , which range in size from tiny specie to elephantine hybrid . They offer masses of semblance and heady fragrancy from March through May . “ Rhododendron intercrossed Bow Bells , one of Mrs. Wagner ’s favorites , bloom from mid - April until at least the conclusion of May , ” Lyke say .

Summer : Most of Lakewold ’s collection of late leaping and summer efflorescence perennials can be found in the cutting garden . The exhibit starts in the spring with hyacinth , peony , Allium , and unfearing geraniums and ends in late fall with asters and Agastache ( giant hyssop ) . This garden room is also frequented by butterflies , hummingbird , Draco flies , and bumble bee throughout the season .

Fall : Japanese mapleAcer palmatum Shindeshojo , located in the lower timber towering over the pool , put up parting that are flaming scarlet in the leap , turn carmine - commons in mid - summer , and become a vivacious blend of red and orange in the gloam , fit in to Lyke .
