Build a Decorative Garden Ladder
Out with the quondam and in with the new ! My favorite old painter ’s run that has live inmy gardenfor years in the end begin to rot beyond repair so I thought it was time to work up a new one . This prison term I decided to establish a super - size garden ladder made specifically to be a medallion : not for climb on . This way I could use the same sizing woodwind ( 1×3″ ) for all the while ( except the top board ) with no vexation about making it substantial enough for humans .
You may not require your ladder to be this large . I ’ve stick mine in a garden bed fill with tallbee balm(monarda ) plants and it looks just right in proportion to the plants .
My intent was to make run - devising as simple as potential while still ending up with something that looks like a painter ’s ladder .
I ’ve list the wood cut size used so you may idea of what you ’ll need for yours .
Supplies
1Plan Size and Rung Spacing
Materials
Here are the sizes I used .

Lumber Note : Actual wood sizes are not the same as their usual names . For example , a 1×3 piece may actually be 3/4 - in x 2.5 - column inch . The common names are just simpler to utilise so do n’t freak out out if you ’re new to this and notice real - life history measures are dissimilar .
To get set out , decide how grandiloquent you want your ravel and how wide .
I made mine extra large so the side rails are 6 - feet marvellous ( 1 x 3 x 6 ) and the spoke , which would be ‘ steps ’ on a normal ladder , are 24 - inches wide ( 1 x 3 x 24 - inches ) .

2Assemble Rails
I made both side of the ravel ( “ the rails ” ) the same so that I can ( in the hereafter ) place a board across and use it as a shelf for flower bay window .
My stave are or so 13 - inch apart ( space from top to bottom on the rails ) but do map it out to ensure you like how it count and make both sets of rails the same if you require to be able to bestow a shelf later .

Assembly Tip : You will eventually have two nooky holding each rung at each end but but do n’t attach both of them yet . Just bind one at each end so the rung can still be adjusted ( you want them to twist in place for now ) .
We will attach the second screw at each rundle end in Step 4 after the ladder has been secured in its final posture .
Drilling Tip : Always create pilot holes first with a drill bit slimly smaller than your jailer prior to fastening the nooky . This will foreclose the Grant Wood from splitting .
3Join Rails & Level Rungs
Once you have meet the two ravel sides ( rails with rungs ) , it is time to join them together .
Instead of valuate slant , I found a good illusion .
Attach the top joining pieces ( 1 x 3 x 12 - in ) to each of the rails , positioning the screws so that no matter how much you pluck out the rails , the tops of the rails will not peak out above or at the ends of the connection boards . Be sure the screws are the same length from the top and sides at each terminal .
This next picture shows what I signify . I ’ve have the rails angled how I want them , the bring together boards ( 1 x 3 x 12 - inches ) are parallel to the ground , and the two rails are at the same angle and the top joining boards are level .
You may want to line around the upper side of the rail with pencil to mark this position .
Sometimes trying to describe bare labor starts seeming too complicated as I spell it . I hope you ’re finding it helpful !
4Add Top Boards and Side Supports
When you have the ladder in the place you wish for display ( Step 3 ) , add the two slanted support pieces ( 1 x 3 x 36 - inch ) to secure it in position . These are called ‘ spreaders ’ on normal ladder , except these unity do not move .
I started with 1 x 3 x 36 - inch pieces ( 2 total ) and held them where I want to tie them . Then , I marked trim back air where they extended past the rails at each remnant and reduce the woods so it would accommodate utterly in plaza .
These support piece are position just below the 2d rung at the gamy closing and just below the tertiary rung at the crushed end .
Be sure to change by reversal one of them so they form an X from side view : this fashion they will hold your ladder in place .
With the diagonal composition in place , add up 3 boards to the top ( 1 x 6 x 31 - inches ) or whatever scrap pieces you have — this is caled the ‘ top cap ’ on a normal ladder . I position mine so they are both wide of the mark and longer than the top of the ladder .
Now that the ladder is securely fasten , go ahead and add a second gaoler to each rung end to limit them in spot . I angled mine somewhat so rain piddle would could run off .
5Paint and Display
I commit my ladder a few coat of exterior primer - paint in Jazz Blue ( CIL Glidden 30BB 10/337 ) which is the same paint I use for all the accent pieces in my gardenincluding my caducous room access .
I wanted to add some pieces of range of mountains to join the track as a decorative lid tip to old - fashioned ladder but have to look until some shows up at our local 2nd script shop .
The detail sitting on top isthe rain gauge for our weather post . We ’re heading into dusk now but in the spring I will in all likelihood sum up some garden art and a shelf for flower sess and grow some nasturtiums up the leg as one should .
The former painter ’s ladder has been moved to another part of the garden where it can live out its twenty-four hour period in peace .
