Forcing branches of early - flower trees and shrubs is an annual custom many nurseryman recitation , in fact , it is often one of the first gardening skills we get word as a nipper ( I admit , it was my launching drug ! ) , but forcing in January can be more challenging in Zone 5 , since bound is still three or four months off . The closer one gets to warm weather , ( i.e. the longer the day become ) , the fast branches will thrust . In fact , many branch will not force if the plant has not receive a required period of cold , and myopic - solar day photoperiod , which is why some trees and shrub such as lilac and magnolia are more challenging to thrust , that is , unless you are about 3 weeks away from their raw bloom meter .

Those years taught me that with former planning , many trees can indeed be pressure , marvelous ones like American Elm and Maples , even storm into full leaf , and shrubs like rhododendron and lilac , but I am not about to get at with wrapping Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree with credit card , applying mist and damp cotton plant which we would wrap around magnolia and lilac bud ) , this sentence I am just forcing easy trees . well-heeled forcing woody plants you probably already know of , Forsythia comes to nous , and yes , I picked a few from a shrub that Joe told me was growing behind the volaille cage ( I really do n’t like forsythia , but I do like some for forcing , which remind me that I really need to plant a forcing garden out back , but that ’s another post ) .

Lastly , I pick some Willow ( Salix ) specie ,   I must allow in that I do n’t have intercourse exactly what metal money it is , but I do remember that I purchased a pot , named extract of a pussy willow and it was obviously selected for its large catkins .   I call back I purchased it at Weston Nurseries in Hopkington , MA a few years ago .   If one demands impressive twat willow , one must stomach the mussy , aggressive if not ugly bush for I do n’t worry what anyone tell , 99.9 % of willows are not landscape painting worthy . We issue ours down almost completely to the ground ( coppacing it ) every two years , leaving about 10 inches of 1 inch diam trunks , properly called ‘ throne ’ . In no metre , the stools will produce water system shoots which can get hold of tremendous heights in just one time of year . These whips will produce the heavy buds , which is exactly what one want , and this is exactly the way commercial-grade growers of willows produce their canes . Our shrubs rewards us with 10 foot long cane and whips which we can impel in mid winter . Just be sure to institute your choice Pussy Willow in a location where no one will ever need to see it .
