I wish press color palettes , especially with the new colors useable today in many plants . search for odd , out - of - the - ordinary combinations can be fun , and unloose . I was raised as a nurseryman with many rules to follow ; Gertrude Jekyll ’s Pink , ash grey and blue palette , the all white and silver jazz band of a moonlight garden , the burnished , garish palettes of Christopher Lloyds delimitation which are so exciting . As a designer myself , I honour all of those rule , and I have likely tried all of them many times , in many garden place , but I would hardly be a designer worth my soggy boots if I did n’t push the edges and hunting for new motif ’s , new palette and more original and imaginative combinations .
Our color selection is unsubtle today than ever before , so you would think that it would be easy . glorious coral ’s , tantalizing mustard ’s , Paris green , linden , mango - orange and rust-brown Brown University are now all in - trend , as are dark drinking chocolate tinted foliage , merlot colored flowers and close - to - black buds that are being introduced every year . Above is a exam arrangement , just pick out from what is in salad days today in the garden . One challenge ? How do I use the rusty browned plumes of the Celosia ‘ Hot Bisquits ’ that I grow this year … … a suggestion from a fellow futurist who I mold with at Hasbro , Jess ? She speedily pulled a few root of a peach colour Verbena and some tangerine tree colored Nemesia together , and I say ‘ Wow , really ? ” Then , I , spyglass of wine-colored in hand , perpetrate out some clippers and snipped some miniature burnt umber colored arum lily lillies , and a few parting of coleus , which I was trying to refrain from , since as a designer who prides himself on originality , I attempt very hard not to rely on cliche or what I have seen before , so my personal rules were to use no dark flame nettle , no sweet white potato vine , not one green old maid flower .
I like the result , it ’s odd , a little 60 ’s , a trivial 70 ’s influenced , yet modern and current . My plants early in the class to plant an all purple , all smuggled vegetable garden never fleshed out , I needed the room for other thing . Plans on paper rarely work out , but they are a start . The calla lily ended up being too dwarf , and are lost in the garden under hulk annuals that spring up 3 metrical unit tall than they should have , but it ’s hardly a disaster , for I can just cut the flowers and leafage and get together the palette this style . But there have bee surprising successes , like an awe-inspiring coach of Bowea volubis , which alone is stunning as it curl and twist its strange biparous fore which seem like lime tree colored coral , along the poles of the strobilus shaped trellis , but a conjugation with the yearly red dawn aureole relative , Cardinal Flower which now share the quad , is gilding the lily . More on that later , as it is just set out to bud .

Try new color pallet , push yourself , be inspired by anything , a dish cloth , a vintage dress , a carpet pattern – an select your own personal palette . Just recollect that photo of plants are often misleading , plan on 90 % immature foliage back up any color , what I call the canvas coloration – dark-green . Start with your canvas color ( which in a house painting will be a bloodless ground , in plantings outdoors , the background color is generally a shade of green ) . Try other background ‘ canvas ’ colouring material . I ’ve used various flame nettle , grey grasses or artemesia for Ag , textures of grasses admit their bloom , which often become a cloud of mauve or deerskin above the industrial plant , consider tropicals that can be brought in , if you live in the north , such as Phormium ( the peach pillage grassy leafage , above ) . The combos are not endless , but they are expandable once you cut any baggage you may have from say the classics .
