Welcome to the very first sequence ofFine Gardening‘s first podcast , Garden Confidential : story at the crossing of people and industrial plant . I ’m Andrew Keys , and I ’ll be your host here each month .
Last calendar month marked the 10th anniversary of the events of September 11 , 2001 . When I show about the dedication this twelvemonth of the first phase of theFlight 93 National Memorialnear Shanksville , Pennsylvania , I wondered : When horticulture is purportedly less popular now than in the past , why is it that , all across America , we still work to gardens as memorials ?
In this instalment , I speak with Beth Farrell , death chair of the citizens committee that construct theSeptember 11 Memorial Gardenin the township of Sudbury , Massachusetts ( visualise ) .

“ We want a lieu for the family to be able to occur to , ” she say . “ But what we ’ve found over the nine years of remembrance [ was ] the whole townspeople involve to heal . ”
Naomi Sachs , founding father of theTherapeutic Landscapes internet , offer a scientific perspective . “ When a little community can establish a orchard of trees or a community garden and have that be also a way of life to remember people and events , it can be sinewy , ” she says . Sachs discusses Maya Lin’sVietnam Veterans Memorialin Washington , D.C. ; cemeteries as the original garden memorial ; and our metaphysical connector to planted space .

“ Memorials are place of healing . They ’re catalysts for mass not just to remember- but also often to sorrow , ” she explains . “ Sometimes that ’s a solitary act , sometimes it ’s for a family , visit a gravesite , and sometimes it ’s for a whole community or a whole country . ”
“ A garden is symbolic of a whole life cycle , ” Farrell says . “ plant give-up the ghost , but … [they ] add up back again … What make this garden so particular is that it really was a confinement of beloved from all walk of biography across Sudbury … It ’s an amazing garden that way . It belongs to everyone in Ithiel Town . ”
