This unassuming courtyard garden in the countryside of Buckinghamshire , England , was make to unify an existing home with a new extension while meld in with the natural timber around it . The extension is clad with carbonized cedar boards inspired by the Japanese facing proficiency of shou sugi ban ( or charred cedar ) , create an unexpected dividing line with the more traditional cottage - style plate . Yet the marriage works beautifully , with the garden successfully wedding the disparate component together .

Designed by landscape architect Stefano Marinaz ofStefano Marinaz Landscape Architecture , the garden was inspired by the formalness of Japanese intent , as speculate in its rows of pleached wild apple tree diagram and restrained color pallette . A wildflower meadow and aboriginal hedgerow were introduced to blur the boundaries between the domestic garden and the timber around it .
“ If you were to seem at the house as it was without the garden , you would notice that the new elongation and the house are quite different in expressive style . The garden I created is the element that join the extension to the sign . What I bang about Nipponese design is the chasteness of it . We express this by using a colour palette of whites and muted tones that complement the colour of the prolongation and the existing business firm , ” says Marinaz .

The pleached crabapples possess a dominating presence by day , but are even more dramatic at night , when uplighting emphasize their height and uniformness . The trees also render seasonal interest while harmonizing with the natural surroundings . “ The beauty about the crabapples is the flowers in spring , the light leafage in summertime , and the awing small blood-red apple in autumn and winter . Because of the natural circumstance of the property , the wild apple merge perfectly with the planting pallette in the area . It is quite common in the neighborhood to have orchards on the prop , ” says Marinaz .
