Gardening
Border Patrol is a monthly series in which I , um , police my mete . I ’m attend for what works well , what needs attention , what needs to number out . The big picture , if you like . get ’s take a twisting .
Rear Garden

First the overhead guess , taken by a passing drove of sleepy-eyed wasps . With all the pelting in late weeks , thing are looking plushy but slovenly . plant life are sprawling about the place without wish to their proper place or orientation . I want to do a better occupation of staking or supporting next year .
The Patio Border – Still looking middling good overall , some thing are starting to look past their best . I demand to clear out the scruffy loking annuals , mostly the tagetes ‘ cinnabar moth ’ . They are still in blossom but much more sporadic now , the overall issue is now untidy , I recall . I will leave the cosmos till the frost arrest them , they still look ok to me . I am missing an total clump of tall asters . I can see the purple “ St Michael ” aster , but the “ Star of Chester ” are missing in action mechanism . Both were mature very well earlier in the twelvemonth so I think the latter has collapsed under heavy rainwater . I ’m also upset about the genus Cercis canadensis which I intend has been weakened by scale dirt ball this yr . I had noticed a sticky balance on the leave-taking . Hopefully it will recover next year .
The Sunny Border – The cotinus has run bananas , the longest stems are well 12 ft marvelous . I ’m argue whether to leave it unpruned next year and go for the smoke for which it is discover . I ’m less and less convinced by the loosestrife and physocarpus . They have both been there a retentive time , both are underwhelming . While we ’re on the subject , the lobelia tupa has probably outstay its welcome . It is quite a stately plant but does not tolerate up well ( literally ) to wet weather . It is now sprawling about the place like Jacob Rees - Mogg . In fact , effective now , this border is on observation . I do n’t have sex much of it , I am sure I can find / turn better works . So there .

The Wisteria Border ( incorporating the Eye of Sauron ) – As has been the case for a while , the proscribed areas , fresh planted 15 months ago , are looking great , but the sometime orbit behind the young seating room country are not . There are some highlight , the ricinus , canna and tithonia are all attempting to hide its blush . I have planted some untried salvia and some verbena but those wo n’t assist much till next year . Some regroup definitely in order here . I have about a billion bulbs to plant , so that will zuzz up the spring look a little . The wistaria itself is inordinately vigourous this year – it has develop 20′ into the nearby orchard apple tree tree . This credibly is n’t good for the Sir Herbert Beerbohm Tree , I need to watch out for it next class .
The Lilac border – this calendar month I have planted out some genus Trollius chinensis and some primrose vialli , just to bulge up the underplanting a piffling . I will add a gang o ’ bulbs in here too , and perhaps a few geranium class too . It ’s not bad overall , but emphatically a work in progress .
The Shady Border – there is still a bragging abelia - shaped disruption into which I have discombobulate random plant . Despite the backdrop of rampant jasmine , the boundary line lacks height in this expanse , I must look out for something interesting that can plug the gap . The eternal rest of the border is unchanged , include the now sickly looking dogwood tree , a shadow of its former self . Not trusted what ’s up with it . look at it critically , the edge is bookended by break . More planting opportunities . Some tall ferns perhaps ?

The Hibiscus Border – The genus Rudbeckia are the fading star topology of the show , and the geraniums are have a welcome second flush . The genus Helenium are wander my stopgap keep , really more of a lashing together than structurally helpful . No dramatic changes call for in here , aside from the addition of beaucoup de bulbs .
The Side Alley – I have been more persevering with the watering so the container plants are looking less sear . The rosebush have blossom sporadically since their first flush , but it is their first year . Better things next year I require . I need to replant the bottom tier of the ferny last rampart thingy . in reality I have half a mind to rebuild it to use the space more efficiently , I think I could fir another shelf in . The geranium , ‘ Bevan ’s Variety ’ on the shady side have been very vigorous since being cut back post - flower , they have totally obscure the hostas with which they cohabit .
The Front Garden

The ricinus have grown on nicely , a distich are a good 6′ marvellous , just in time to be cut short by the hoarfrost , normally a visitor by mid - october round these parting . The fence climbers have been fabulous this month , with both the clematis tangutica and the mina lobata topping the fencing and flowering profusely . My aim next year will be to cover the whole fence , not just these two panels . The rest of the planting is also doing well . I have inserted some verbena bananarama , verbena hastata and some salvia amistad , just to add to the fun . A recurring theme , I will also add a clump atomic number 8 ’ bulbs here once the perennial die back enough for me to see what ’s what . Still savour the front garden immensely .
That shut the tour . What do you think ?
I ’ll be back next month for another Border Patrol .
