Happy New Year ! While there are still a few more twenty-four hour period left in 2022 , I ’m always happy to receive a novel yr . I am frantic to see what 2023 has in store . Do you have any agriculture solvent ? Think how much can be accomplished in 365 day !
I ’m already making plans for farming projects I intend to harness in 2023 . I speculate you could call them New Year ’s resolutions , but I consider of them more as inspiration , both for myself and ( hopefully ) for readers .
I ’ve partake in my agriculture resolution every year since 2016 . The goal of this yearly exercise is n’t to compile a list of resolutions that must be follow at all costs . Rather , I hope to further proactive thought process about fun projects to accomplish during the coming year .

With this destination in mind , here are five of my 2023 New Year ’s farming resolutions .
1. Run Garden Hoses to My Orchard
The new orchard I set out planting in 2018 is expand . Every year I expand it a little bit , focusing the last duet of year on tote up a garden section with raised beds for growing corn and pumpkins . But my plantation is about 600 pes out from the nearest urine reservoir . And the35 - Imperial gallon pegleg tankI’ve traditionally used to add on rainfall is no longer a sentence - effective way to keep everything watered .
I ’ve thought about arrive a 2d ( or tumid ) tank . But after reevaluate my options I ’ve resolve to run a longsighted line of garden hoses to my plantation instead .
I experimented with hoses a duo calendar month ago and found water pressure sensation was still worthy even across the 600 - substructure distance . So in 2023 I mean to run hoses immediately to my garden beds and simplify the process of watering everything thoroughly .

2. Continue Post-Storm Tree Cleanup
The impact of the herculean December 2021 thunderstorm thatblew down a couple XII treesacross my farm can still be felt . While I made bully progress address the biggest messes in 2022 ( calling in professionalswas a big help ) , there ’s still more to be done in 2023 .
As before long as the ground dries out sufficiently in spring to reserve a tractor and cart to drive around without risk of getting stick around , I ’ll resume killing with an eye on completely conquering the violent storm debris
3. Prune My Fruit Trees
Many of the young fruit Tree in my plantation arise with incredible vigor in 2022 . It was by far their skilful yr so far from a growing stand , suggest the trees are settling in nicely and hopefully set up to produce telling fruit crop in the coming years .
But leave unsupervised , yield trees do n’t necessarily develop in the best manner for yield production . Some of the offset on my trees are lower than I would prefer for mowing . Others are a bit too upright , or too long and gangly .
My yield trees needcorrective pruningto shape them favorably for healthy and fat lives . you could bet I ’ll be fussy with my pruning tools in recent winter .
4. Invest in Anvil Pruning Loppers
This is actually unrelated to Resolution 3 , because incus pruning pruner are n’t really desirable for cleanly cutting delicate bouncy growth . But the crushing strength of anvil pruning loppers ( as counterbalance to the slicing action of bypass lop loppers ) urinate them perfect for remove limbs from drained trees and cutting up shine branches .
A duo of anvil pruning lopper will serve me well as I execute Resolution 2 .

5. Build a Bridge in My Orchard
For a couple of years now I ’ve wanted to build a wooden bridge over a low touch in my orchard where water gathers in the spring and after heavy rainfalls . I ’ve already removed sod from along the way of this natural “ flow ” and backfilled it with rounded stones , pass on the depression of a streambed . I ’ve also planted water - loving iris along the banks .
build the bridge is gamy on my list of “ just for play ” projects in 2023 . It will serve as the focal point of a highly picturesque orchard area .
